Community Interpreting Services (CIS) is the Sign Language Interpreting booking service of the Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Many Deaf, Deafblind and Hard of Hearing individuals rely on Sign Language as their primary mode of communication. CIS provides interpreters for all appointments in the community except those of a medical nature, interpreting services may be funded by provincial or municipal grants or fee-for-service. Professional Sign Language Interpreters provide persons who rely on Sign Language greater access to communication. Interpreters bridge the communication barrier by conveying the purpose, tone and spirit of the message between individuals who do not share a common language.

To Schedule an Interpreter:

Interpreting services can be arranged by telephone, fax, TTY, email or videophone. When scheduling an Interpreter, you will be asked the following information, to better assist the Booking Coordinator in selecting the best Interpreter for the assisnment:

• Date and time of the appointment.
• Estimated length of appointment.
• Client's first and last name.
• Specific location information, such as address and room number
• Pertinent information about the situation which will assist the interpreter in preparing for the appointment.
• Billing address and phone information
• Main contact person

CIS strives to meet each of our consumer's needs for interpreting services. In order to ensure the fulfilment of your interpreting request, we ask that you give as much notice as possible prior to the assignment date. In doing so, you increase the success of obtaining an interpreter at your requested time.

• Professionally trained
• Required to follow a strict code of ethics as adopted by The Association of Visual Language Interpreters of Canada (AVLIC) www.avlic.ca
